Safrus/Scribal Work

Safrus is the scribal tradition of transforming ancient abstract ideas in Judaism into tangible material form. For me, each opportunity to write a piece of our holy literature, using the materials scribes have used for thousands of years, makes me feel viscerally a part of history.

Until very recently, the safrus practice has been open only to men trained within Orthodox communities. This has meant that progressive communities beyond Orthodoxy have been left without representation in this field. When they would hire a sofer, they would not see their values reflected in the person writing and repairing their holiest texts.

As a queer woman living in the 21st century, I am proud to bring both traditional training and a modern lived experience to my scribal practice.

I am available for torah checking and repair work, tefillin inspection and repair, and smaller scale safrus projects such as smicha (ordination)/b-mitzvah/baby naming certificates, or excerpts of liturgical texts.

At this time, I am not accepting commissions for mezuzah klafim, or new writing of megilot or torahs.
